Description:
The history of the Hill of Crosses is mostly built from legends. This place is closely associated with multiple wars and uprisings. The first few dozens of crosses were installed here in the 19th century, and a little more than 100 years later their number was already several thousand. In Soviet times, it was forbidden to bring and install crucifixes, but residents of nearby cities and pilgrims did not give in to their faith and continued to do so. In 1961, the authorities of the Union began to clean up the entire sacred territory. However, such a development of events only kindled a fire in the souls of believing citizens.
To date, the peak has more than 100 thousand crucifixes and their number is constantly increasing. Now this area has financial support from the Franciscan friars and the municipality of the nearby city of Siauliai.
