This archi­tec­tur­al struc­ture was con­ceived as the city’s cer­e­mo­ni­al entrance from the sea and became a dom­i­nant fea­ture of its sky­line. It was designed by archi­tects Franz Bof­fo, Avraam Mel­nikov, and Karl Poti­er, and con­struc­tion last­ed from 1837 to 1841. Its design is based on the prin­ci­ple of arti­fi­cial per­spec­tive: the low­er part is sig­nif­i­cant­ly wider than the upper, cre­at­ing the illu­sion of equal width when viewed from above and mak­ing the stair­case appear more majes­tic when viewed from below. Orig­i­nal­ly, it had 200 steps, but after recon­struc­tion, only 192 remained. The struc­ture is 27 meters high and 142 meters long. The stair­case has repeat­ed­ly attract­ed the atten­tion of writ­ers, artists, and direc­tors. It became famous world­wide after the release of Sergei Eisen­stein’s film “Bat­tle­ship Potemkin” in 1925, which fea­tured the famous scene with the car­riage. In the 19th cen­tu­ry, it was called by var­i­ous names: Riche­lieu, Niko­laev, Bul­var­naya, and Por­to­vaya. Over time, its cur­rent name became estab­lished. The stair­case became not only an archi­tec­tur­al land­mark but also a sym­bol of the city, a place for meet­ings, strolls, and cul­tur­al events. Its steps are com­fort­able to climb due to their low height, and the land­ings between flights allow for rest. The upper plat­forms offer panoram­ic views of the port and bay, mak­ing it pop­u­lar with tourists and locals alike. Despite its age and the effects of coastal soils, the struc­ture has been pre­served in good con­di­tion thanks to restora­tion. Today, it remains a must-see and pho­to­graph des­ti­na­tion, and one of the most rec­og­niz­able sym­bols of 19th-cen­­tu­ry archi­tec­ture.
