Монументальная лестница в Одессе с 192 ступенями, символ города и его архитектурная доминанта.
Описание:
This architectural structure was conceived as the city’s ceremonial entrance from the sea and became a dominant feature of its skyline. It was designed by architects Franz Boffo, Avraam Melnikov, and Karl Potier, and construction lasted from 1837 to 1841. Its design is based on the principle of artificial perspective: the lower part is significantly wider than the upper, creating the illusion of equal width when viewed from above and making the staircase appear more majestic when viewed from below. Originally, it had 200 steps, but after reconstruction, only 192 remained. The structure is 27 meters high and 142 meters long. The staircase has repeatedly attracted the attention of writers, artists, and directors. It became famous worldwide after the release of Sergei Eisenstein’s film “Battleship Potemkin” in 1925, which featured the famous scene with the carriage. In the 19th century, it was called by various names: Richelieu, Nikolaev, Bulvarnaya, and Portovaya. Over time, its current name became established. The staircase became not only an architectural landmark but also a symbol of the city, a place for meetings, strolls, and cultural events. Its steps are comfortable to climb due to their low height, and the landings between flights allow for rest. The upper platforms offer panoramic views of the port and bay, making it popular with tourists and locals alike. Despite its age and the effects of coastal soils, the structure has been preserved in good condition thanks to restoration. Today, it remains a must-see and photograph destination, and one of the most recognizable symbols of 19th-century architecture.
