Description:
The arch was demolished by order of Kim Jong-un. The Arch depicted a map of a unified Korea, supported by two Korean women in national traditional dresses. The inscription with Korean text located under the map of Korea attracted attention; the number “3” symbolized the three signed declarations. Under the Reunification Arch ran the four-lane Reunification Highway, which connects Pyongyang to the Demilitarized Zone.
The base of the monument featured various inscriptions in support of unification and peace from various people, organizations and nations. On January 15, 2024, the head of the DPRK, Kim Jong-un, in his speech at the 10th session of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK, recognized the peaceful unification of Korea as impossible and stated that the arch should be eliminated. On January 23, 2024, information appeared in the media that the Reunification Arch had been demolished. This is evidenced by published satellite images dated the same day.
