The arch was demol­ished by order of Kim Jong-un. The Arch depict­ed a map of a uni­fied Korea, sup­port­ed by two Kore­an women in nation­al tra­di­tion­al dress­es. The inscrip­tion with Kore­an text locat­ed under the map of Korea attract­ed atten­tion; the num­ber “3” sym­bol­ized the three signed dec­la­ra­tions. Under the Reuni­fi­ca­tion Arch ran the four-lane Reuni­fi­ca­tion High­way, which con­nects Pyongyang to the Demil­i­ta­rized Zone.

The base of the mon­u­ment fea­tured var­i­ous inscrip­tions in sup­port of uni­fi­ca­tion and peace from var­i­ous peo­ple, orga­ni­za­tions and nations. On Jan­u­ary 15, 2024, the head of the DPRK, Kim Jong-un, in his speech at the 10th ses­sion of the Supreme Peo­ple’s Assem­bly of the DPRK, rec­og­nized the peace­ful uni­fi­ca­tion of Korea as impos­si­ble and stat­ed that the arch should be elim­i­nat­ed. On Jan­u­ary 23, 2024, infor­ma­tion appeared in the media that the Reuni­fi­ca­tion Arch had been demol­ished. This is evi­denced by pub­lished satel­lite images dat­ed the same day.
