The Local His­to­ry Muse­um of Dil­i­jan was opened in the 1950s. Exhibits found in the city dur­ing the con­struc­tion works were dis­played there. Lat­er the col­lec­tion was replen­ished with the works trans­ferred to the muse­um from the funds of the Nation­al Gallery of Arme­nia. Over time, it grew to 700 works, which became an issue of hous­ing them. Ini­tial­ly, the gallery was locat­ed in an old build­ing used as a hotel, but in 2008, it was decid­ed to dis­as­sem­ble the old build­ing and build a new one in the same place. In 2010, the offi­cial open­ing of the muse­um in the new beau­ti­ful build­ing was held. As of today, the col­lec­tion of the muse­um con­sists of about 400 works.
