Description:
The main and most famous square of New York. About 300,000 people visit the square daily.
Times Square takes its name from the headquarters of the New York Times, which moved to One Times Square in 1904. Before that, the area was called Longacre Square.
Since 2011, smoking has been prohibited in the square.
The photograph of the famous kiss between a soldier and a nurse took place in Times Square at the end of World War II and was documented by Alfred Eisenstadt.
The Times Square NASDAQ sign costs over $37 million and is the largest LED sign in the world, standing 11 meters tall. The square contains about 50 billboards advertising everything from clothing to food to banks. And the first large billboard was installed in 1917. They have become a real attraction for tourists that now all buildings are required to be covered with advertising boards.
In the mid-seventies, tourists avoided Times Square. The square was a dirty place, full of criminals and drugs.
