The Tomb Shaft of Amuntef­nahkt is one of the most remark­able ver­ti­cal bur­ial struc­tures of the 26th Dynasty. It descends deep under­ground to a bur­ial cham­ber of a high-rank­ing offi­cial, rich­ly adorned with funer­ary texts and sym­bol­ic reliefs. The tomb includes a shaft over 20 meters deep linked to hor­i­zon­tal cor­ri­dors. Its walls fea­ture excerpts from the Book of the Dead and pro­tec­tive deities, while one cham­ber has a star­ry ceil­ing on a blue back­ground. Schol­ars believe the struc­ture may have been reused in lat­er peri­ods. It was first explored by Euro­pean archae­ol­o­gists in the ear­ly 20th cen­tu­ry.
