A royal burial site on Kasubi Hill in Kampala, where four kabakas — kings of the Baganda people — are buried. Unique as a spiritual center and an outstanding example of architecture using organic materials.
Description:
The Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi constitute a site embracing almost 30 ha of hillside within Kampala district. Most of the site is agricultural, farmed by traditional methods. At its core on the hilltop is the former palace of the Kabakas of Buganda, built in 1882 and converted into the royal burial ground in 1884. Four royal tombs now lie within the Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main building, which is circular and surmounted by a dome. It is a major example of an architectural achievement in organic materials, principally wood, thatch, reed, wattle and daub. The site‘s main significance lies, however, in its intangible values of belief, spirituality, continuity and identity. Covering about 30 hectares, the site includes the former palace of Kabaka Mutesa I, built in 1882 and converted into a royal tomb in 1884. The main building — Muzibu Azaala Mpanga — is a circular structure with a dome, made of wood, reeds, clay, and thatch. It serves not only as a burial site but also as a symbol of spiritual continuity, belief, and cultural identity of the Baganda people. Inside lie the tombs of four kabakas: Mutesa I, Mwanga II, Daudi Chwa II, and Edward Mutesa II.
