Description:
Few people remember the terrible terrorist attack that took place on September 19, 1989, over the Sahara Desert. On that tragic day, the plane of the French company U.T.A. (Unlimited Travel Agency) was on scheduled flight 772 from Brazzaville (People’s Republic of Congo) to Paris. Among the 155 passengers on board were six Libyan terrorists, who brought the bomb on board. Eighteen years after these terrible events, relatives of the victims built a memorial at the crash site. As a result of the plane crash, all 155 passengers and 15 crew members died. The plane crashed near the cities of Bilma and Tenere in Niger. The memorial, erected in the heart of the Sahara, can rightfully be called one of the most inaccessible in the world, since getting here is problematic. Despite this, the work on the construction of the memorial was crowned with success. The complex is a life-size “silhouette” of an airplane, laid out of dark stones on yellow sand. The image of the airplane is “inscribed” in a circle with four arrows resembling a compass. 170 broken glasses are laid out around the circle, corresponding to the number of people on board, each of them a reminder of those killed in the terrorist attack. A fragment of a wing from a DC-10 passenger plane, found at the crash site, is installed on the northern arrow. It is noteworthy that many fragments can still be found in the surrounding area, since the area is deserted. Stones for the memorial were delivered by trucks, and drivers had to cover a distance of 70 km. Two months of hard work in difficult climatic conditions were crowned with success — the monument was completed.
