Few peo­ple remem­ber the ter­ri­ble ter­ror­ist attack that took place on Sep­tem­ber 19, 1989, over the Sahara Desert. On that trag­ic day, the plane of the French com­pa­ny U.T.A. (Unlim­it­ed Trav­el Agency) was on sched­uled flight 772 from Braz­zav­ille (Peo­ple’s Repub­lic of Con­go) to Paris. Among the 155 pas­sen­gers on board were six Libyan ter­ror­ists, who brought the bomb on board. Eigh­teen years after these ter­ri­ble events, rel­a­tives of the vic­tims built a memo­r­i­al at the crash site. As a result of the plane crash, all 155 pas­sen­gers and 15 crew mem­bers died. The plane crashed near the cities of Bil­ma and Tenere in Niger. The memo­r­i­al, erect­ed in the heart of the Sahara, can right­ful­ly be called one of the most inac­ces­si­ble in the world, since get­ting here is prob­lem­at­ic. Despite this, the work on the con­struc­tion of the memo­r­i­al was crowned with suc­cess. The com­plex is a life-size “sil­hou­ette” of an air­plane, laid out of dark stones on yel­low sand. The image of the air­plane is “inscribed” in a cir­cle with four arrows resem­bling a com­pass. 170 bro­ken glass­es are laid out around the cir­cle, cor­re­spond­ing to the num­ber of peo­ple on board, each of them a reminder of those killed in the ter­ror­ist attack. A frag­ment of a wing from a DC-10 pas­sen­ger plane, found at the crash site, is installed on the north­ern arrow. It is note­wor­thy that many frag­ments can still be found in the sur­round­ing area, since the area is desert­ed. Stones for the memo­r­i­al were deliv­ered by trucks, and dri­vers had to cov­er a dis­tance of 70 km. Two months of hard work in dif­fi­cult cli­mat­ic con­di­tions were crowned with suc­cess — the mon­u­ment was com­plet­ed.
