Description:
A glittering sandstone cliff. Although it appears to be a carefully crafted sculpture with its white color, illusion of layers, and straight lines, this incredible cliff face is an entirely natural formation. Unlike the iron-rich, orange-hued sandstone found in the rest of the area, Wedding Cake Rock is a light-colored limestone. Its peculiar shape is the result of an accidental initial formation and millions of years of erosion. Suspended 82 feet above sea level, the cuboid rock is almost unbelievably picturesque. Unfortunately, its beauty may also be its undoing. While new viewing platforms are in the works, public access to the rock was closed in 2015. A recent geotechnical assessment found that the rock is precariously balanced on the edge of the cliff and is severely undercut and in danger of collapsing into the ocean.
