Church in honor of St. Gregory the Illuminator, a monument of Armenian architecture of the 7th century. In 2000, the ruins of the temple and the archaeological area around it were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to one version, the name translated from ancient Armenian means “temple of vigilant angels”, from the Armenian zvartun – angel. The temple was a round three-tiered domed structure. In the 10th century, the temple collapsed during an earthquake due to the weakness of the support nodes of the second tier.
