The cor­ner tow­er with a round cross-sec­­tion was, per­haps, the most beau­ti­ful in the Krem­lin before the con­struc­tion of the hipped super­struc­ture of the 17th cen­tu­ry. The tow­er was built by Anto­nio Gilar­di in 1488 as one of the first struc­tures to pro­tect the approach­es from the Moscow Riv­er. Many inno­va­tions were used in the design of this tow­er: in Russ­ian serf archi­tec­ture, arca­ture belts, machico­la­tions and “dove­tails” had not been used before. The tow­er received its first name — Svi­blo­va — after the sur­name of the own­ers of the court­yard adja­cent to it. In 1633, a water-lift­ing machine by Christo­pher Galovey was installed in the tow­er, which gave it its mod­ern name. This device, which became the first water sup­ply sys­tem in Moscow, sup­plied water to the Syt­ny and Kor­movoy palaces, and lat­er to the Krem­lin gar­dens. In 1812, the tow­er was blown up by the French, but already in 1819 it was restored under the lead­er­ship of O.I. Beau­vais.
