The Borovit­skaya Tow­er crowns the main pas­sage Borovit­sky Gate, through which gov­ern­ment motor­cades and vis­i­tors to the Armory Cham­ber enter the Krem­lin. It was built by Pietro Anto­nio Solari in 1490 on the site of the tow­er of the same name built in 1461. The ancient for­est that once cov­ered these places gave its name not only to the tow­er, but also to sev­er­al ancient church­es that stood near­by. The Borovit­skaya Tow­er has an unusu­al pyra­mi­dal shape, formed by sev­er­al quad­ran­gles decreas­ing in size, topped by an octa­gon with a hipped top. This entire super­struc­ture was erect­ed at the end of the 17th cen­tu­ry instead of the wood­en tent that crowned the Solari quad­ran­gle. Pseu­­do-Goth­ic decor appeared on the tow­er in the 18th cen­tu­ry, but was prac­ti­cal­ly destroyed in the 19th cen­tu­ry and was restored only dur­ing the restora­tion of the 1970s.
