Description:

En Ру

The Borovitskaya Tower crowns the main passage Borovitsky Gate, through which government motorcades and visitors to the Armory Chamber enter the Kremlin. It was built by Pietro Antonio Solari in 1490 on the site of the tower of the same name built in 1461. The ancient forest that once covered these places gave its name not only to the tower, but also to several ancient churches that stood nearby. The Borovitskaya Tower has an unusual pyramidal shape, formed by several quadrangles decreasing in size, topped by an octagon with a hipped top. This entire superstructure was erected at the end of the 17th century instead of the wooden tent that crowned the Solari quadrangle. Pseudo-Gothic decor appeared on the tower in the 18th century, but was practically destroyed in the 19th century and was restored only during the restoration of the 1970s.
