Description:
In the original version, it was still red, with red brick cladding. The tower approximately dates back to the first half of the 15th century and belonged either to the order’s castle or to the fortress that surrounded it. When the Swedes demolished the old fortifications in the 17th century and created a new layout, the tower ended up in the depths of the quarter and was used as a prison for a long time. Then in 1783 it was rebuilt, again as a prison, used as a museum, city archive, reconstructed in the 1970s, and finally it turned out to be a squat white tower – the oldest building in the city, which really looks very medieval, somewhat reminiscent of the Tolstaya Tower Margarita in Tallinn (it also has very thick walls). Be sure to study the location of the tower: it is hidden in the courtyard, it is almost impossible to notice it from the street. Inside there is a cafe with a tourist-oriented souvenir/antiquities shop. During the low season, the gates are closed, so travelers must be content with an external inspection.
