This fortress was built in the 17th cen­tu­ry when the Knights of St John con­quered Mal­ta. It is one of the six Las­car­i­an tow­ers (Las­caris was a Grand­mas­ter of the Knights). The Red Tow­er was built after the Turks entered Mal­ta from St Paul’s Bay and man­aged to get to Mel­lieħa and the town was com­plete­ly unpro­tect­ed. This event demon­strat­ed the impor­tance to amp up the defence of North­ern Mal­ta.
