The road, made of large stone slabs, stretch­es for sev­er­al kilo­me­ters across sev­er­al dis­tricts of the repub­lic, but a sig­nif­i­cant part of it was flood­ed dur­ing the cre­ation of the Sayano-Shushen­skoye reser­voir. Accord­ing to leg­end, the troops of Genghis Khan passed along the road, but the exact pur­pose and time of con­struc­tion are unknown. A sec­tion of the road has been pre­served in the vicin­i­ty of the vil­lage of Shanchy (Chaa-Khol dis­trict). Although the stonework is hun­dreds of years old, it still looks mon­u­men­tal. There are sev­er­al oth­er his­tor­i­cal attrac­tions in the vicin­i­ty, includ­ing pet­ro­glyphs on the rocks and Bud­dhist shrines.
