The former Upper Trading Rows. Built in 1889-1894 according to the design of Alexander Pomerantsev and engineer Vladimir Shukhov. Interesting not only for their appearance, but also, like all Shukhov’s projects, for their rather unusual interior design: for example, a vaulted glass ceiling. The building is huge, with its façade length alone being 242 m. After numerous resales, the store returned to its original name, GUM, but the G now stands for “Main”. Dozens of boutiques, an elite grocery store, and quite a few cafes, including a couple of inexpensive canteens, are located on three floors and three lines running along the entire building. In the center of the passage is a fountain, which is now unlikely to surprise anyone, but at the beginning of the 20th century, and even in Soviet times, it was a curiosity, one of the traditional meeting places: “at GUM by the fountain.” To entertain visitors and tourists, GUM has opened a historical toilet, where you can visit a spacious restroom decorated with gold, granite and marble.
