The for­mer Upper Trad­ing Rows. Built in 1889–1894 accord­ing to the design of Alexan­der Pomer­ant­sev and engi­neer Vladimir Shukhov. Inter­est­ing not only for their appear­ance, but also, like all Shukhov’s projects, for their rather unusu­al inte­ri­or design: for exam­ple, a vault­ed glass ceil­ing. The build­ing is huge, with its façade length alone being 242 m. After numer­ous resales, the store returned to its orig­i­nal name, GUM, but the G now stands for “Main”. Dozens of bou­tiques, an elite gro­cery store, and quite a few cafes, includ­ing a cou­ple of inex­pen­sive can­teens, are locat­ed on three floors and three lines run­ning along the entire build­ing. In the cen­ter of the pas­sage is a foun­tain, which is now unlike­ly to sur­prise any­one, but at the begin­ning of the 20th cen­tu­ry, and even in Sovi­et times, it was a curios­i­ty, one of the tra­di­tion­al meet­ing places: “at GUM by the foun­tain.” To enter­tain vis­i­tors and tourists, GUM has opened a his­tor­i­cal toi­let, where you can vis­it a spa­cious restroom dec­o­rat­ed with gold, gran­ite and mar­ble.
