The Postal Muse­um was estab­lished upon the com­ple­tion of the build­ing, in 1931. Ini­tial­ly, the col­lec­tion main­ly con­sist­ed of postal stamps from the Dutch East Indies. Nowa­days, it is a com­plete muse­um, cov­er­ing Indone­si­a’s postal his­to­ry from the begin­ning of colo­nial times in the 17th cen­tu­ry, until the present.
