Leav­ing the Ritz Hotel to evade pho­tog­ra­phers, Diana, Dodi Fayed and dri­ver Hen­ri Paul entered the Pont de l’Alma tun­nel in their Mer­cedes-Benz S280 (W140) at high speed. The car struck the 13th sup­port pil­lar; Diana lat­er suc­cumbed to her injuries en route to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hos­pi­tal.
