Description:
This tiny Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Once famous for its sea captains and thriving trade from Russia to England, France and Italy, and even earlier for the biblical volcanic catastrophe of 1500 BC, today Santorini is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world.
Rocky steep terrain on the caldera side (west coast), volcanic rocks, pumice, unusual rock formations. In other areas the terrain is more gentle. The climate is humid, summers are warm with cool evenings. In August, the famous “Meltemia” winds blow. Rare rainfall in the winter months.
The island’s architecture features cave houses (dug into the volcanic rock), neoclassical mansions, cobbled streets and winding paths, domed churches (many with a blue dome), most houses have a dome in some part of the roof structure.
Agriculture: Vineyards – growing grapes, cherry tomatoes, Santorini cucumbers, fava beans, Santorini capers and cucumbers.
Boats leave from Piraeus all year round. High-speed hydrofoils also leave from Piraeus during the summer season. There are also flights from Crete in the summer. Direct flights from Athens International Airport are available all year round.
