Description:
A huge neoclassical monument, represented by a woman holding a torch in her outstretched right hand and a plaque with the date of the American Declaration of Independence in her left. The crown on the head of the statue with seven teeth symbolizes the seven seas and seven continents of the earth. At the feet of the statue lie broken chains, symbolizing the liberation of America and the whole world from tyranny.
This tall monument to liberty, created in Paris by the French sculptor Bartholdi in collaboration with Gustave Eiffel (who was responsible for the steel frame), was a gift from France for the centennial of American independence.
The sculpture stands at the entrance to New York Harbor. Height: 93 m. The Statue of Liberty was unveiled on October 28, 1886, by US President Grover Cleveland.
The statue was constructed from thin sheets of copper hammered into wooden forms. The formed sheets were then mounted on a steel frame. In June 1885, the statue was delivered to New York Harbor aboard the French frigate Isère. Lady Liberty was transported from France to the United States in disassembled form – it was divided into 350 parts, packed into 214 boxes. Mounting the statue on the pedestal took four months.
There are several versions regarding who became the prototype of the Statue of Liberty. According to one of them, Bartholdi copied the sketch of the sculpture from Isabella Boyer, the wife of Isaac Singer (he improved the sewing machine). According to the second version, the image of a female figure with a torch in her hands was inspired by Eugene Delacroix’s painting “Liberty Leading the People to the Barricades”.
