The memorial ensemble near the Kremlin walls was founded in December 1966 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the defeat of German troops near Moscow. The opening of the memorial, designed by architects D. I. Burdin, V. A. Klimov, Yu. R. Rabaev and sculptor N. V. Tomsky, took place on May 8, 1967. Since December 1997, one of the most significant monuments in the country has been post No. 1; until 1993, this role was played by the mausoleum of V.I. Lenin. The changing of the honor guard, consisting of military personnel of the Presidential Regiment, occurs every hour and is worth watching. To the right of the star with the Eternal Flame is the granite alley of hero cities.
